Well, it’s about time…I finally saw it. Juno! I’ve been hearing so many great things about this movie and I must say…it got me. That’s right…waterworks, emotional rainfall, a misty stroll through the amazon…tears. I admit it, I don’t care…I’m man enough to admit that a movie about irresponsible teenage impregnation single handedly increased my household’s need for Kleenex brand tissues. But I mean, come on, it wasn’t that bad…OMG they’re getting divorced, what’s she gonna do! Sorry…I’m fine. It’s just that…he ran all the way there from his trackmeet still in his awesomely ridiculous uniform…aww! Okay really, I’m good. And if you haven’t seen this movie you probably think I’m insane, but hey, if you have seen it then I’m fine right? Queue the poster:

But to me, seeing this movie wasn’t about awkward teenage/30 something moments in the basement, or psychotically urgent mothering desires…it was all about the supporting cast. I heard a few weeks ago from Kaaren de Zilva who called into the studio to order some new images for an article about her in the Sunday Times in Sri Lanka which can be viewed here. This is when I found out that Kaaren was a part of the film in a great role as the “(ornery) ultrasound technician”. As the article on Kaaren states, it really is a pivotal scene and I was really rooting for you in there Kaaren when things got ugly, but that verbal lashing was handed out to you on a platter! Oh snap! But kudos to you for helping dysfunctional step-family members bond.
Another cast member that I just realized after a quick search on IMDB is Emily Tennant who we shot last year as well. Emily’s part as “Pretty-to-Goth Girl” (HEY! Goth girls are pretty too!) is hard to describe, but sort of a realtime visual narrated montage of her transformation from regular Emily to goth Emily. A great placement for her as during her shoot Kevin got everything from beauty queen to intense punk rawker.

I hope I didn’t miss any other clients of Kevin’s…I’ve only been here a year, so my mental database is limited. Everyone else in the cast was great as well. I never get tired of Jason Bateman’s intelligently aloof banter, just the same as in Arrested Development and Smokin’ Aces…but keep it up, I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it. Michael Cera was gold as always too, his meek bumbling cracks me up no matter what he does, never mind the baggy short-shorts and wrist-bands. And of course the outstandingly witty Ellen Page who is in a just slightly less uncomfortable role from the last flick I saw her in “Hard Candy”. I always wondered why that movie poster had her standing in a bear trap…ouch.
Everyone in this film gives a great performance, there are too many to mention. I highly recommend you go see it. It’s still in a theatre or two here and there and will probably be out on DVD soon, so see it!
